Our values
Superior musicality and professional behavior in everything we do.
Committed to each other, to our music and to our purpose.
We respect and value our fellow members in rehearsal, in performance and everywhere in between.
History
The Southern Gentlemen began as a few SMU men singing hymns at Sunday services. Today we're SMU's oldest a cappella group.
To bring musical entertainment to SMU's campus and the Dallas area while providing student members with social and artistic opportunities for enjoyment and growth.
Milestones
The first Gents sing as supplemental choir singers, hired by local churches for Sunday services. The early repertoire is mostly hymns.
The group sings at the groundbreaking for the George W. Bush Presidential Library on SMU's campus.
The sound turns to classic college a cappella: pop, country and R&B. Serenades for new sorority members win over campus, and a Michael Jackson medley stops the show at the 2011 talent show.
Funded by outside gigs and a partnership with SMU's Department of External Affairs, the group records five songs with producer Mark Hines of The Vocal Company.
The Gents perform for guests at the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, alongside the Belle Tones, Voices of Inspiration and the Meadows Chorale.
SMU's two oldest a cappella groups team up on a cover of Cam's “Burning House.”
After years of work, the group releases a nine-song album on September 5, 2016.
The pandemic moves rehearsals online. At one point the group is down to five members learning music over Zoom, with no performance in sight.
In-person rehearsals return in September 2021, and the group starts rebuilding.
Our six-song EP is released on February 27, 2023.

No. The Gents have always drawn singers from across campus, and plenty of members study something other than music.
Right now: auditions are open. The group traditionally holds auditions each fall, and again in spring when spots open up.
That's fine. Choose “Not sure” on the form and we'll work it out at your audition.
We rehearse, perform concerts on campus, sing at games and events around Dallas, and record.
